Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratorysyndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was declared a pandemic by theWorld Health Organization in March 2020. Amidst the global lockdown,scientists have worked tirelessly to formulate vaccinations to curb furtherspread of the disease, in an attempt to restore normalcy in the health of thepopulation as well as the global economy. While healthcare professionalsand medical students have sound knowledge regarding the clinicalmanagement of COVID-19 patients, there is lesser knowledge regarding thetypes and exact mechanism of action of different vaccines. This reviewtherefore aims to present an overview of the globally approved COVID-19vaccines and a brief on the various vaccine technologies. The purpose is toenable members of the medical fraternity obtain the necessary knowledgeregarding vaccines in a concise manner.
